Brest

November 2, 2011

In the harbour of Brest stands a castle which saw action right up to WWII. Considering it’s age and damage sustained in the war, the castle is still impressive. The view from the castle ramparts is good but at night when the castle is lit up and the lights are reflected in the sea it’s even better.

A novel way to tour the surrounding area of Brest is to hire a boat and travel along the canals. There are over 200 locks on the total canal length giving plenty to see and do in the little villages on the banks. Even if you don’t fancy boating you can walk or cycle along the pathways.

Pay a visit to Oceanopolis the biggest open air aquarium in the whole of Europe. It divided into different areas according to climate and the sealife living in each area. It’s great for the kids as they can touch and feel certain things living in the sea. It is very informative and interesting.

Another interesting place to see is the Amorique Nature Reserve. Board a ferry from Brest harbour to the island of Ushant to this beauty spot. There are forest walks with clear paths to follow to take in the views of both mountains and sea. You can also explore the island by minibus or bike.

There are many lovely little places within easy reach of Brest worth a visit. To get a taste of this area try the delicious seafood, wine and the famous Breton crepes, savoury or sweet.
